A letter from Ben Netherton
We have over 15 years of intensive experience with custom residential construction, excavation, and land improvement. Based in Smithville, Oklahoma, we serve Broken Bow, OK to Mena, AR and surrounding areas, including Hochatown, Octavia, Watson, Cove, and more.
Our story begins in the late 1990’s when I began developing skills and work ethic using the business end of a flat-head screwdriver to pull weeds for neighbors in the rock-hard dirt of Tucson, Arizona. My dad invested much in teaching integrity, diligence, fiscal responsibility, creativity, trust in God, as well as carpentry and landscaping skills throughout my childhood. Later on, interest in automotive mechanics and a willingness to sweep shop floors led to experience building and maintaining custom hot rods and motorcycles.
My first introduction to construction sites was as a technician on a termite crew as we pre-treated pads in preparation for concrete slabs to be poured. I didn’t realize at the time how valuable it would become that I spent so many hours working alongside the owner of the company as he met with clients before and after jobs, dealt with hang-ups, managed employees, and spent his evening hours at a desk in his shop filling out paperwork while I got to work on whatever Hot Rod project we had going at the time.
In September of 2007 I moved to Broken Bow, Ok to begin as a laborer on a construction crew. By the time February of 2009 rolled around I had gained basic skills in timber framing, trim carpentry, concrete, framing, electrical, plumbing, and equipment operation. A sudden tragedy dissolved the organization I was working for and provided me the opportunity to set out on my own.
Soon after, we printed our first set of business cards, bought company magnets for the side of our truck, and with the help of a 3-inch-thick college-level construction textbook, we started seeking small construction jobs. In November, 2009, my wife Sarah and I, broke ground on our first custom-cabin build, doing business as Netherton Construction. For the next 10 years we averaged a single custom-designed-and-executed work of art annually. Some even won awards and appeared in magazines. Countless smaller projects fell in alongside such as concrete countertops, outdoor fireplaces and timber-frame structures, bathroom and kitchen remodels, even a few major structural re-constructions.
When COVID hit in March, 2020, we recognized an opportunity to adjust our direction. My favorite days to this point were always those spent operating equipment outdoors. We had reached the point of handling all of the dirt work and clearing for our own projects. We even owned some equipment. So, we took a leap of faith and began turning down carpentry work as we pursued “Netherton Construction LLC - Land Services.”
As our equipment fleet and experience grows in this field of work, we refuse to neglect our core values of quality workmanship, honesty, and integrity. Even though some may say we just work with dirt and trees, I firmly believe that every single project challenges our creativity and presents the opportunity for us to leave behind a valuable work of art. Our machine operators join us in our love of serving clients as we enhance the beauty of the land God has given us dominion over.
Many thanks to all those who have contributed to our growth in the past and will continue with us on this journey in the future!
Benjamin and Sarah Netherton
